Adnan Mahmood, a business and enterprise tutor at Barking and Dagenham College, has been nominated for the celebrated Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize. The winner will win £1 million in a ceremony early next year.
Teachers from 179 countries are entered for the Global Teacher award. Adnan Mahmood has been shortlisted in the competition alongside 49 other competitors. The Varkey Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation, gives the award to ‘one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession and shines a spotlight on the important role teachers play in society’. The £1 million prize money is awarded over 10 years, but only if the recipient stays in teaching for half of that time.
Three other British teachers have also been shortlisted for the prestigious award. These include Nathan Atkinson, headteacher at Richmond Hill Primary School in Leeds; Raymond Chambers, a computer science teacher from Brooke Weston Academy; and Peter Ferris, a drama teacher from Mercy College in Belfast. Last year, Richard Spencer, a teacher at Middlesbrough College, was named in the final 10 candidates.
Mr Mahmood, who also won the title of VQ Teacher of the Year in 2015, told TES magazine: ‘[I’m] completely overwhelmed, just completely overwhelmed and shocked and surprised. It’s a fantastic achievement to be [in the] top 50. You know it’s an honour to be part of [the] global top 50 [teachers]. It just makes me laugh. I can’t believe it.
I think it’s fantastic that you know this award represents FE. For me I’m passionate about enterprise education and putting that at the forefront, because, for Barking and Dagenham College, enterprising entrepreneurship is very important for us. it’s great to see that FE is being showcased as well.’
The final 10 candidates will be announced in February and the winner will be revealed in March in Dubai. We wish Mr Mahmood the very best of luck!
