What's been happening in the world of Further Education?

February was an eventful month for the world of FE. There’s been skills competitions, merges and closures. Here are just some of the news stories from the last month.

FE News

The AoC reveals plans to avoid a £1 million overspend
Following an internal review, The Association of Colleges (AoC) has announced plans to overhaul its structures and alter membership fees with the aim of cutting £1 million from its budget. The current organisation has been deemed ‘unaffordable’ unless it makes some changes.

Teaching Further Education with Costa Coffee
A number of FE Colleges are partnering with the PopUp College initiative to provide adult education classes in Costa Coffee shops. Over the past decade, the adult learning budget has been cut by 40% and routes that don’t lead to a formal qualification have been slashed. Coffee shop learning provides a more relaxed environment for adults who want to learn new skills and access different learning paths.

Farming apprenticeships at risk due to funding cuts
There has been a lot of focus on apprenticeships. The government believes they are on track to meet their target of 3 million, the online apprenticeship registration opened, and the apprenticeship achievement rate fell to 67%. Most recently, a huge number of agricultural apprenticeships could be cut due to lack of funding.
