2016 was a busy year for Further Education. What will 2017 bring?

Welcome to the first TeachInFE Newsletter. As one of our New Year’s Resolutions, we’ve decided to produce a monthly newsletter to provide both recent news across the FE sector and regular updates of how TeachInFE is performing.

FE News
We take a look back at what happened in the Further Education sector at the end of 2016:

The Area Reviews
At the end of 2016 the Area Reviews were released by the Department for Education. These detailed recommendations for Colleges across the country.  The aim of them was to create colleges that are efficient, sustainable and financially viable. Since then, the Department for Education has confirmed that it has set aside £726 million for the changes suggested by the Area Reviews.

Tutor shortlisted for Global Teacher Award
Adnan Mahmood, a tutor at Barking and Dagenham College, has been nominated for the Varquey Foundation Global Teacher Prize which offers an award of £1 million. 179 countries are involved and he is one of four teachers in the UK to be in the 2016 final fifty. The final ten will be announced in February 2017 and the winner will be decided in March 2017 in Dubai! We wish Mr Mahmood the best of luck!

£4.5 million given to Colleges to fund degree apprenticeships
The Higher Education Funding Council (Hefce) gave funding of £4.5 million to chosen Colleges to finance 5,200 degree apprenticeships for students starting their studies in 2017. The funding was awarded to 18 institutions who were selected from the 70 bids that were sent in. Five of these Colleges are FE Colleges who will work alongside universities to deliver appropriate training.

2016 was a busy year for TeachInFE! We launched in June, having been developed by the sector, for the sector. Since then, we have worked hard to increase our number of Colleges, jobs and users.

We want to keep improving these numbers this year to become your main hub for Further Education jobs, news and information. Here are highlights of our key stats from 2016:

  • 101 Colleges signed up for our free to advertise service
  • Over 2,200 FE teaching jobs were advertised on our site
  • 30,000 total users – and this is growing at 10,000 new users per month! 

We hope that 2017 is just as exciting and wish you all a fantastic start to the New Year!
